Employee Spotlight Mark Landy: Hard Work, Heart, and Humor
Mark Landy, Retail Banking Manager in St. Paul, is comfortable with responsibility. He started working as a paper boy at age nine. He shoveled snow, mowed lawns, and has been paying taxes since he was 14.
Landy spent 20 years in the restaurant industry, working as a dishwasher, line cook, and everything in between. He later became General Manager. He then transitioned to highline sales, which refers to selling higher-priced, premium goods.
It wasn’t until a good friend mentioned Coulee Bank and the incredible work culture that Landy decided to try something a little different. That friend sparked a conversation that ultimately led him to his favorite job ever! “I now can make a positive difference in our community, and for the first time in my life, I found work/life balance,” he says.
He believes change is a constant, and creating a team that grows, adapts, and sticks together gives our customers confidence in Coulee Bank. “Our team at Coulee Bank is strong and awesome! No one can know everything, so having a variety of great teams makes collaboration easier,” he explained. Every team strives to tackle obstacles in its department. He never feels like he is on an island trying to accomplish everything. “I hope the entire team and our customers feel the same way,” he notes.
Coulee Bank encourages employees to be active in the community. Landy chose Rotary. He says, “I never knew how much good could be accomplished by so few people. It has given me the ability to use those experiences to help with fundraising campaigns like Toys for Tots, school supplies drives, and the United Way,” he shares. Landy counts his active role in the West St. Paul–Mendota Heights Rotary Club among the highlights of his time at Coulee Bank.
Outside of work, those same qualities continue to guide how Landy shows up in his everyday life. Family is everything. Landy says he has been married to an amazing woman for 20 years, and he has four children, two grandchildren, and two dogs. To achieve this beautiful life, you have to work at it, and it looks like Landy has done just that. He believes he is the luckiest person on the planet.
He loves making his family laugh with puns and classic dad jokes—the kind that make you groan—because he believes laughter is contagious and good for the soul. When he isn’t cracking jokes, music helps him unwind, and skateboarding with friends is a fantastic pastime.
Speaking of skateboards, he loves collecting them along with art, toys, books, and collectibles like Pokémon cards and Hot Wheels. He even collects Olive shells that he has personally found while walking along the ocean.
