Doing Things the Right Way: The Role of Compliance at Coulee Bank

When you think about the people who help keep your banking experience safe, fair, and dependable, a compliance officer may not be the first role that comes to mind. Yet behind the scenes, Coulee Bank’s compliance team works every day to help ensure our policies, procedures, systems, and employee training align with federal and state banking requirements.

A Day in the Life of a Compliance Officer

Our Compliance Officer, Carly Pederson, says, “My overall responsibility is to ensure that our policies and procedures follow all federal and state banking laws and regulations.” She spends most of her time reading regulations and “translating” the requirements into real-world policies, procedures, and documents that we use when serving our customers.

Protecting the customer is at the heart of everything we do. A compliance officer reviews and updates internal policies, helps write procedures, trains employees on compliance topics, works with technology vendors to ensure our systems are compliant, and tracks and monitors almost everything to make sure the bank is doing things the right way.

Protection You May Not See, but Can Count On

Banking regulations play an important role in protecting consumers. Pederson explains, “Some regulations focus on protecting the privacy of your personal data, some on protecting you from unfair fees, predatory lending, and discrimination.” Others support the financial stability of the bank and help ensure customer deposits remain insured and secure. Regulations also play an important role in preventing financial fraud and identity theft, while limiting a customer’s financial responsibility if a debit card is lost or stolen. Although much of this work happens behind the scenes, its purpose is straightforward: to safeguard customers and provide confidence in their banking experience.

“Compliance officers play a crucial role at the bank because some things simply cannot be automated,” says Pederson. Strong procedures and training help ensure manual tasks are completed correctly, but unusual situations can arise that even the best procedure does not address. In those moments, employees are encouraged to reach out to Pederson and the compliance team for guidance. “We are always willing to work with someone to figure out the issue.”

At Coulee Bank, compliance is about more than following rules. We protect our customers, support our employees, and uphold the trust our communities place in us every day. Through careful attention, ongoing education, and a commitment to doing things the right way, the compliance team helps make banking safer, fairer, and more dependable for everyone.
