Shopping online for a vehicle can be convenient, but it is important to make sure the seller is legitimate before sending money. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is warning consumers about an increase in “dealer cloning” scams, in which criminals create fake dealership websites or social media profiles that sometimes impersonate real, licensed dealers to advertise vehicles they do not actually have for sale. These listings often feature attractive prices, professional-looking photos, and requests to complete the entire transaction online.

Before making a purchase, take time to research the dealer and verify its phone number, address, email, and license status. Be especially cautious of prices far below market value, pressure to avoid visiting in person, websites with errors or altered photos, and requests to send payment by wire transfer or other unusual methods. Whenever possible, inspect the vehicle and dealership in person before finalizing the purchase. WisDOT maintains an updated public list of licensed vehicle dealers that consumers can use as part of their research.

If something does not feel right, pause and walk away. Taking a few extra steps before sending funds can help protect you from a costly scam.
