Debit Card Fraud Alert Back

Attack Details:

There have been many recent reports of vishing (voicemail) and SMiShing (text message) attacks on debit card holders. The attacks seem legitimate and can be very deceiving.  Some have targeted specific financial institutions by name; others have used a fictitious, but official-sounding, financial organization's name.

The vishing attacks have consisted of either a callback requirement on the part of the victim (For example: the victim is told to call a specific telephone number to release account information, such as a debit card number, PIN, or expiration date), or required the victim to provide information during the initial call (For example: speak or key in account information).

The reported SMiShing attacks, which occur through the use of text messaging, have required that the potential victim either call back a specific telephone number or reply with a text message including the account information the fraudster requested.

If you are Attacked:

Write down the name of the organization the attackers are masquerading as during the call, the caller ID telephone number of the call itself, the callback telephone number that is given (if any), and the exact information that you are being asked to provide during the call.  Then contact your Financial Institution right away with this information.

If you have Fallen Victim to an Attack:

If you have already fallen victim to one of these attacks and revealed any information, contact your Financial Institution immediately so your card can be deactivated to prevent fraud.  Coulee Bank customers should call 608-784-9550 during bank hours and 1-866-508-2693 outside of bank hours if they have revealed any information during one of these attacks.

On October 3, 2008, FDIC deposit insurance temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through December 31, 2013. For more information please contact Coulee Bank or visit www.fdic.gov.
